Cytogenetic Analysis in 4,326 Cases of Amniocentesis

Abstract
Amniotic fluid obtained in pregnancy has been utilized successfully to detect genetic defects of the fetus.
Recently, marked advances in cytogenetic techniques made a valuable contribution toward the morden practice of obstrics and gynecology.
This study includes 4,326 midtrimester pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis to detect fetal chromosomal abnormality in the cytogenetics laboratory at Kyung Hee University Hospital from January 1980 to February 1989.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1. Among 4,326 cases, old age group (¡Ã35 years of age) was highest(56.1%).
2. Oveal incidence of chromosomal aberration was 1.2%(53/326), and chromosomal abnormalities is most frequently noted in women 40 years of age or older(3.3%).
3. Numerical aberration was 37 cases(69.8%), and structural aberration was 16 cases(30.2%).
4. Autosomal aberration was 41 cases(77.4%), and sex chromosomal aberration was 12 cases(22.6%).
5. Among the autosomal aberration, Down's syndrome was 15 cases(28.3%), 18 trisomy somy was 7 cases(13.2%), and marker chromosome was 6 cases(11.3%).
6. Among the sex chromosomal aberration, 47 XXX was 4 cases(7.5%), klinefelter syndrome was 3 cases (5.7%), Turner syndrome was 2 cases(3.8%), and 47 XYY was 2 cases(3.8%).
7. Among the Down's syndrome, 21 trisomy was 11 cases(73%), translocation was 2 cases(13%), and mosaicism was 2 cases(13%).
